Brexit deal at the centre of Interior Minister's contacts in London

With a view to safeguarding the rights of Cypriot citizens living in the United Kingdom, following the implementation of the Brexit deal, the Minister of Interior, Mr. Nicos Nouris, who is currently in London, held on 16 January 2020, separate meetings with the Minister of State for Security and Deputy for EU Exit and No Deal Preparation, Mr. Brandon Lewis, as well as with the Minister of State for Europe, Mr. Christopher Pincher.

During the meetings, Mr. Nouris reiterated Cyprus’ support for a full Brexit deal between the United Kingdom and the European Union. At the same time, the need for the adoption of reciprocity policies was confirmed, as regards Cypriots living in the United Kingdom, in relevance to the rights pursued by the United Kingdom for its own citizens living in Cyprus, in light of Brexit.

Both Mr. Lewis and Mr. Pincher expressed their will for mutual cooperation between the two countries, reiterating the United Kingdom’s support of the Republic of Cyprus, especially vis-à-vis the Cyprus problem.

Moreover, the Minister of Interior held meetings with the leadership of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK) and of the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK, during which he expressed the Government’s steady support regarding the issues overseas Cypriots are concerned with. In the presence of the Director of the Press and Information Office, Ms. Sophie Michaelides, Mr. Nouris made a suggestion to carry out an extended campaign to inform Cypriots living in the United Kingdom to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme, to be run jointly by the Press and Information Office and the High Commission of Cyprus in the United Kingdom.
