Once the United Kingdom (UK) exits the European Union (EU) it will become a Third Country.

If the UK exits the Union after having ratified the Withdrawal Agreement, the ΕU law will cease to apply to the UK as from 1 January 2021. Until then a transitional period will be implemented, during which the current arrangements will continue to apply and the future relationship will be negotiated.

If the UK exits the EU without a Withdrawal Agreement, there will be no transitional period and EU law will cease to apply to the UK from the exit day.

When the UK becomes a Third Country, the EU rules on controls on consignments of imported food from the UK will be the same as any other Third Country. Therefore, all food imported will be checked at the Entry Points of the Republic of Cyprus.

The areas that will be affected either in case of agreement or not are:

  1. Food labelling
  2. Food ingredients, contaminants and food residues, food contact materials
  3. Food business Operators who have received approvals under Regulation (EC) 1829/2003 and Regulation (EC) 1935/2004 and Directive 2009/54/EC
  4. Food production rules, food hygiene rules, food irradiation rules
